| This is the time of year in SW Ontario for fighting grubs and other soil borne insect larvae including crane fly larvae with beneficial nematodes. Beneficial nematodes are microscopic worms that seek out grubs and kill the grubs. Nematodes need adequate moisture in order to migrate through the soil. Benefical nematodes are non-toxic, harmless to pets, earthworms, fish and plant roots.
Other environmentally friendly tips for discouraging insect infestations:
1) Remove thatch , it harbours harmful insects such as cinch bugs. Thatch makes your turf vulnerable to stress, drought and disease and grub infestations. A healthy soil that has been fed organically will actually have all the components necessary to break down thatch naturally.
2) Overseeding especially in bare patches will choke out weeds and and make your overall lawn more resistant to grubs.
3) When watering make sure to water deeply, 1inch. Deeper roots make the surface roots thicker and tougher and less desirable to grubs.
Apply nematodes now(late May/early June) and again in the fall. |
